How the average puppy develops from birth to one year
1-4 weeks
- Take to vet at one or two days to check for congenital malformation
- Dew claws can be removed 2-5 days old
- Ask vet to show you how to clip pup's nails
- Eyes and ears open at about day 10-14
- Day 15-18 puppy can stand up
- Day 20-22 pup begins to walk
- Puppy is learning by the relationship with its mother
- Puppy should be weaned by 4 weeks
8 weeks
- It is now save to de-worm and administer the puppies first series of vaccinations
- First teeth start to come in.
- Puppy needs contact with litter-mates to learn social skills
- You can start house training at this early age – the earlier the better
8-12 weeks
- Second in series of vaccinations will need to be administered
- Puppy needs lots of human contact
- Puppy should be ready to leave its mother by week 10-12
- Puppy Learns to develop closeness with people.
- Lots of human contact at this age is beneficial
- Introduce collar and puppy should be doing good with house training
12-16 weeks
- Third series of vaccinations are now required
- Can start puppy on heartworm prevention program
- Puppy's size increases rapidly and motor control is developed
- Puppy likes to enjoy the outside world
- Puppy learns confidence and how to handle new situations, (such as going up and down stairs, going through doors)
4-6 months
- Spay and neuter dogs at six to eight months
- Puppy begins to lose puppy teeth - be prepared with chew toys
6-12 months
- Yearly vaccination is due at 12 months
- Test blood for heartworm each spring and maintain preventive medicine
- Six to twelve months a female comes into heat
- Males start to lift leg, Leg lifting and shows the start of a males sexuality
